Five personnel of the Nigerian Navy (NN) were wounded Friday while fighting the fire that engulfed a boat belonging to the NNS Pathfinder base at rumuolumeni, near Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers state in the oil producing Niger Delta region NN Spokesman, Way Olabisi, said the injured personnel were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. He said the fire, which started early Friday, was caused by a fault at the boat’s electric fuel line, rather than a militant attack as speculated in some quarters. It took a combined team of fire fighters from the Navy and two oil companies – Shell and Mobil – to put off the fire. ”We also want to use the opportunity to dispel any rumour that militants attacked our base and were the cause of the fire,” he said, adding that the fire would not affect the ability of NNS Pathfinder to carry out its duties in the oil region.
