Twenty- one illegal migrants, all from sub-Saharan Africa , who were attempting to reach the Canary Islands, Spain, were arrested on Thursday in Laayoune, the capital of Western Sahara. The illegal migrants were nabbed about 60 kilometres south of Laayoune, said a statement by the Wilaya, the administration of Laayoune. It did not state the nationalities of the illegal migrants. Sub-Saharan illegal migrants arrested in Morocco are generally repatriated to their respective countries in co-ordination with their diplomatic representatives in Rabat. Reinforced control on borders and sea routes, especially in the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, has changed the routes of the illegal migrants. The Canary Islands, among others, have now become their land of hope.
