At least four people have been killed in fighting between two ethnic communities in Bawku in the North-eastern corner of Ghana. Interior Minister Kwamena Bartels said the fighting started between the Kusasis and the Mamprusis on Sunday, when an opinion leader of one group was shot and died while being taken to the hospital at Bolgatanga, the upper east capital. Bawku and its environs have been under night curfew for months, and Bartels said it had been tightened from 9am GMT to deal with the situation. But sources said fighting has intensified as people with guns move from house to house. Residents said there is no security presence, but Bartels said reinforcements were being sent to the area. The two ethnic groups have always clashed over chieftaincy disputes.
