Ghanaian security agencies have seized 399 kilos of cocaine that had been smuggled into the country by road from Guinea, police said on Saturday. Police said they impounded the vehicle in which the drug had been concealed at Nsawam, the last big town just outside the Ghanaian capital, Accra. Police Chief Superintendent Owiredu Nkansah said the operation was carried out upon a tip-off. Three people on board the vehicle including the driver have been arrested and are assisting in investigations. Chief Supt. Nkansah said the drug was transported from Guinea through Kumasi, Ghana’s second largest city. The drug has been handed over to the police Criminal Investigations Department a nd Narcotics Control Board. Ghana has been battling with huge imports of drugs and is being assisted by the British authorities at the Kotoka International Airport to arrest couriers. Substantial amounts of drugs have disappeared from police custody or under their watch, while suspects have been allowed to slip out. Drugs have also vanished form the safe of the Narcotics Control Board.
