The second week of the joint 2010 World Cup/A frican Cup of Nations qualifiers saw Burkina Faso defeat Burundi 2-0 in a match played Saturday at the 4-August Stadium. Moumouni Dagano, of Sochaux FC, a team of the French League, scored a double, at the 25th and 43rd minutes, respectively. After their last week stunning away victory against the more fancied Tunisians, Burkina Faso Stallions are comfortably leading Group 9, with a total 6 points and goal difference +6. The Stallions dominated the match against the Burundians, who saw their play-maker ousted by the referee, while the game was only 20 minutes old. “We are reconciled with the fans, who now know that their team has the potential for qualifying for the World Cup. Nothing is impossible, we just need to believe in our potential,” the Portuguese-born coach, Paulo Duarte, said after the match.
The Burkinabe midfield, spearheaded by an outstanding Mahamoudou Kéré, succeeded in quelling all attempts by Burundian players to move forward and create chances for scoring.
