Egyptian security forces Sunday arrested 44 African migrants in an attempt to stop them from illegally entering Israel, a security official said. The 44 were part of many African migrants here, who have increasingly seen Israel as their best chance for starting a new life. The majority of migrants who enter Israel do so in search of work. Among those arrested were 15 Eritreans, including four women, an Ethiopian man and 28 Sudanese. Israel has asked Egypt to do a better job in securing the largely unguarded border between the two nations, and Cairo has deployed more police to the area in an attempt to foil migrants’ plans. Since 1 January, Egyptian police along the border have killed at least a dozen African migrants, triggering condemnation from Amnesty International over Egypt’s use of force.
