Five copies of the book Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie were seized at the weekend from some bookshops and supermarkets by the police following protests by some individuals, the country’s Arts and Culture minister, Mr. Mahen Gowreessoo, said Wednesday. At the parliament, while answering questions posed by the leader of the opposition Paul Berenger (who wanted to know more about the importation and sale of the book), Mr. Gowreessoo confirmed that the book was forbidden on the island since 1989. A copy of the controversial book was burnt in public last week by members of an Islamic organisation called Zam Zam.
