The chairman of the West African Economic and Monetary Union(UEMOA) Commission, Soumaïla Cissé, Wednesday in Sélefougou, south-western Mali, launched a pilot project on biological cotton growing. The project, which would also spread to Burkina Faso from 2008-2010, will gulp a bout CFAF393 million. The project, awarded to Swiss company Helvètas, will extend to Senegal and Benin. It will be jointly funded by the French region of Bretagne and UEMOA for up to CFAF143 million. In Mali, the project should help produce 100 tonnes of seed cotton in 2008, 1,500 tonnes in 2009 and 2,300 tonnes in 2010.
