Despite positive developments in the recovery process from war, the economic and security situations in Liberia remain “fragile”, United Nations Heads of Peace Missions in West Africa said in Dakar on Saturday.
“The situation remains fragile and more needs to be done to reform and strengthen the rule of law, in particular the police and judicial institutions,” the UN officials observed at a meeting in Dakar. Meanwhile, the mission chiefs have commended the Liberian government for making strides in promoting economic recovery programmes and poverty reduction strategy. They also cautioned about “the possible spill-over effect of political tensions in neighbouring countries” and reiterated the importance of cooperation, such as joint patrols, to deter illegal cross-border activities within neighbouring states.
