Sierra Leone to probe former corrupt government officials

President Ernest Bai Koroma has set up a commission to probe former ministers and senior officials of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) government in response to popular demands of the population. “We are not going to tolerate a situation that would allow holders of public office to abuse state properties or embezzle state funds and get away with it,” acting Information and Communications Minister Mohamed D. Koroma said. The SLPP was defeated by the All People’s Congress (APC) in elections in September/October last year. A press statement released by the Ministry of Information and Communications said President Koroma had set up of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate individuals of government and institutions including former ministers in the Ahmad Tejan Kabbah-led government. The statement said the Commission to be headed by the Attorney General Serry Kamal would in no way duplicate the functions of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The Commission of Inquiry will take its bearing from a 17,000-page report compiled by a transition team set up by President Koroma in October last year. The report consists of information regarding the way state funds were disbursed and projects implemented.
