Mr. Deda Halake, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Gambia’s pro-government newspaper, Daily Observer, has been arrested and is being detained at the Kotu police station, police sources confirmed in Banjul on Sunday.

According to sources, Mr. Halake’s arrest is in connection with “financial mismanagement” at the newspaper.

He was picked up at his home in Kotu by officers of the Kotu police station who invited him for questioning but upon his arrival he was arrested and informed of “financial mismanagement” at the Daily Observer.

Sources further said Halake would be transferred on Monday to the Gambia police headquarters in Banjul for further investigations.

Halake was appointed late last year after his predecessor Dr Sarja Taal was sacked by government.
