Namibia’s defence forces chief, Lieutenant-General Martin Shalli, arrived Friday on a four-day visit to Zimbabwe. During the visit, Shali will hold talks with top Zimbabwean military officials on co-operation between the two countries, which are members of a regional defence pact involving Angola and DR Congo. He said Namibia was neutral in Zimbabwe’s ongoing political stand-off, and backed the mediation efforts of South African President Thabo Mbeki. The country’s political stability has been shaken by a tug-of-war between the government and the opposition ahead of a run-off poll next Friday. “The Namibian government’s position is very clear. It is not in our interest as Africa to interfere in another African country’s internal affairs,” Shalli said.
