Armed men, suspected to be members of the rebel Casamance Democratic Forces Movement (MFDC), exchanged fire with Senegalese government soldiers, injuring one soldier in the process. The confrontation took place between Tendieme and Kouteghor, about 33 kilometres north of Zinginchor. The exchange of fire followed an armed attack by the rebels on a vehicle conveying some civilians. One man died and a woman was injured in the attack. The Senegalese soldiers, learning of the attack, cordoned off the area and in an exchange of fire with the rebels, one soldier was slightly wounded. A government source said that the rebels, numbering about 10, had laid an ambush along the road and forced the driver of the vehicle to stop. According to an eyewitness, the rebels dispossessed the passengers of their belongings, including mobile phones, jewelries and suitcases before withdrawing into the forest. A number of similar government/rebel military confrontations have been recorded in the region since March.
