Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa has been evacuated to Paris, France, for specialist treatment, Vice President Rupiah Banda announced Tuesday night. Banda said in a statement that President Mwanawasa, who was admitted to Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital on Sunday after he suffered a stroke, was flown to Paris on Tuesday and that his condition was stable. President Mwanawasa suffered a stroke on Sunday while in Egypt where he had travelled to attend the African Union summit which ended Tuesday. Meanwhile, messages for the quick recovery of President Mwanawasa have been pouring in. Among those who have wished the President a speedy recovery are leaders of the opposition parties, religious groups and the civil society. The Bishops Fellowship of Lusaka were expected Wednesday to hold a national prayer meeting for the President at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka.
