Egypt said on Tuesday that one of its border patrol police officers has been killed by smugglers who refused to heed calls to stop and opened fire on him and his men. The incident on Monday is the most recent incident in a string of killings related to African refugees seeking a better life in Israel. Since the beginning of the year, more than a dozen Africans have been shot dead by Egyptian border police when they get caught attempting to sneak across the lengthy desert border in Sinai that splits Egypt and Israel. The official Egyptian news agency MENA reported that the smugglers killed Mohamed El Qirsh after a shootout when the police patrol tried to force the group to stop. Police are currently searching for the smugglers in the Sinai Peninsula. Israel has repeatedly demanded Egypt do more to stem the flow of people across the border. Many refugees and migrants believe that Israel holds a better future for them than the struggles of life in Egypt. Dozens of Africans have been arrested trying to cross the border.
