About 49 Gambians, who entered Spain illegally, have bee n deported, immigration sources said Monday. Chief Superintendent Olimatou Jammeh-Sonko, Gambia’s Immigration department spokesperson, confirmed the arrival of the deportees here. She said the Gambians were escorted by Spanish police officers who handed them over to the Gambia Immigration officials late Monday. According to her, the latest batch of deportees from Spain follows the recent deportations of Gambians, mostly youths, who embark on the failed journeys, mostly sea, in an attempt to the European mainland. She said The Gambia had lost many of its citizens on the high seas, adding that parents of the victims were still waiting to make contacts with their wards. She pointed out that her department was doing everything possible to stop the practice of illegal migration to Europe.
