Nigeria emerges winner of International Tennis Federation competition despite Ghanaian performance

Nigeria’s representatives at the three-week International Tennis Federation Under-13 boys’ competition in Dakar, Senegal, emerged overall winners despite a late surge that saw their Ghanaian opponents winning the singles and doubles titles in the third and final week. Umoru Balami from the Co-Foundation in Nigeria’s northern city of Kaduna and Tamina Kienka from the International Tennis Academy in Lagos won two singles, one doubles and made two runner-up singles position. The Ghanaian team of Moses Armah and Gabriel Atteh won the last singles title, two doubles titles and one doubles runner-up spot. The Nigerian boys emerged overall winners of the boys’ event on the strength of the singles, scoring more points than the doubles. Balami, who was gunning for a hat trick of singles titles going into the third week finals, was beaten by Armah 6-4, 6-3. Armah and Atteh also won the doubles, upstaging the Nigerian boys 5-7, 7-6, 6-1.
