A week after they suspended their crippling five-week strike, professional teachers in Nigeria’s public schools have bagged a 27.5% pay rise. The salary increase was announced Wednesday evening by Dr. Bukola Saraki, the chairman of the governors’ forum, an umbrella body for all the country’s 36 states. The announcement followed the conclusion of negotiations between the teachers, under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), and the governors. The teachers had been demanding the establishment of a special Teachers Salary Structure (TSS), and it is not clear if the increase has eclipsed that demand.
