The Mauritian Environment Ministry plans to endorse new rules allowing an audit of industrial waste on the island, with a view to mitigating its impact on the environment and the people’s health. An official with the ministry said Tuesday that the audit would make a thorough analysis of the various types of waste generated by industrial activities across the island. “All companies will have to get data on the origin, composition, volume and manner of the wastes they produce and how such wastes are collected or destroyed,” the official said. He said the essence of the new measure was to reduce the consumption on raw materials generating waste and to cut the processing costs. According to him, such exercise will also prompt Mauritian companies to be proactive in efforts to protect the environment.
