Prof. Barineme Fakae, the Vice Chancellor of the Rivers state University of Science and Technology in Nigeria’s restive Niger Delta oil region, has been freed, five days after he was abducted by unknown gunmen in the state capital, Port Harcourt, the police said on Saturday. The VC, who was kidnapped at the Khana area of the state, was freed unharmed Friday night. Police spokesperson Rita Abbey said Fakae was freed around 11pm local time at an undisclosed location, and that she was not aware whether or not any ransom was paid for his release.
