Six people are known to have died when a light aircraft crashed in the central Mozambican city of Beira on Saturday. According to a report on Radio Mozambique, the plane crashed at about 1400 local time in the area of the Palmeiras beach. The plane had flown from the South African city of Durban and the crash occurred as the pilot was approaching Beira airport.
The report quoted an eye witness as saying that the plane was flying in an erratic fashion, and it seemed that the pilot was trying to ensure that the plane came down in the sea, and not in the city. In fact, the crash occurred on the shore, and on Saturday afternoon parts of the wreckage could be seen floating off the coast. No further details, including the names and nationalities of the dead, are yet known.
