Guinea Bissau police arrest officials over disappearance of large quantities of narcotic drugs

The police have arrested four agents of Guinea Bissau’s migration and border services and their leader over the disappearance of a large quantity of seized narcotics, police sources said Friday. According to the same sources, the arrests followed the disappearance of 1,500g of cocaine, out of the 1,850g that were seized 18 September at the Bissau airport. One of the officials have been released provisionally while the others are still being detained. The disappearance of seized drugs has become a recurring incident in Guinea Bissau. On 24 September 2008, 674 kg of seized cocaine disappeared in unclear circumstances. On 17 July 2008, a plane from Venezuela was impounded with more than 500 kg of cocaine on board. Since then, nothing has been heard about the seized drug. During his address to the nation on the 34th anniversary of the country’s independence, President Nino Vieira had admitted that “drug trafficcking is a cause for concern for the authorities in Guinea Bissau”.
