Newly appointed South African President Kgalema Motlanthe on Thursday said his government would ensure that the country’s preparations for the 2010 World Cup would remain on track. In his acceptance speech to the National Assembly after being sworn in by Chief Justice Pius Langa, he said: “We will remain on course for the best FIFA World Cup – an African World Cup. We fully expect to meet every commitment our nation has made to the football world.”
The 2010 Local Organising Committee will call an urgent meeting next week to determine how the country’s new cabinet will affect preparations for the tournament. The LOC is keeping FIFA updated on all developments.
