Football : Gambian national team the Scorpions in Senegal for joint 2010 CAN – WC qualifiers

Gambian senior national team, the Scorpions, departed the Banjul International Airport Friday for Dakar to take on the Lions of Senegal in the joint World Cup and African Nation’s Cup qualifiers. The team, headed by Coach Paul Put, departed at 11am local time, with confidence as Gambians prayed for a successful outing that will see the team to Angola (for the nations’ cup) and South Africa (for the World cup). Coach Put expressed confidence in the team, but quickly said that Senegal paraded big time players who had gained some world cup experience. On the level of home support, the country’s largest GSM provider, Africell, is funding the transportation of fans and journalists to the match. Since independence, Gambia’s national team has never defeated Senegal at the senior level.
