An Islamic Sharia court in Nigeria’s central city of Minna has granted ‘protective bail’ to the 84-year-old Islamic Cleric, Bello Masaba, who is facing charges related to his marriage to 86 wives, the local press reported Tuesday. Presiding Chief Magistrate Ahmed Bima said the ‘protective bail’ was to ensure the safety of Masaba, who is facing a ‘fatwa’ or death penalty imposed by an Islamic body for marrying 86 wives in contravention of the Islamic creed. The Judge ordered the Niger state government to provide accommodation for the cleric in Minna, capital of Niger State, while he can only be visited by only four of his 86 wives. The Cleric was granted bail on the condition that he produces two sureties worth 1 million naira (US$8,500) each Masaba was arrested and charged to court for ”insulting or inciting the content of a religious creed and unlawful marriage” 15 September. His wives later staged a public protest to demand an unconditional release of their husband.
