A senior Cameroonian gendarme, Captain Felix Leuy Tah of Mayo-Kani, extreme-north of Cameroon, was shot dead on Tuesday, official sources said on Wednesday. According to officials of the State Defence Secretariat in charge of the gendarmerie, Captain Tah, who was on his way to free children taken hostage a few days earlier, fell into an ambush laid by the kidnappers and he was shot. The sources said the attackers escaped, following an exchange of fire with the defence forces, and left the children. On month earlier, Captain Tah had uncovered a cache of weapons and ammunition suspected to belong to Chadian rebels.
