The Egyptian government has donated two electricity generators, 50 tons of tents and kitchen equipment to Sudan’s Joint Integrated Units (JIUs), as part of efforts by Cairo to support the Sudanese military, Egyptian officials said. They said the supplies were the first in a series of planned assistance to Sudan’s military. The JIU is supposed to be the starting point for the unification of the Sudanese army, if Southern Sudan votes to continue to remain a part of the country in 2011. United Nations Security Council Resolution 1812 stresses the important role of the JIUs in the implementation of the country’s Comprehensive Peace Plan and has urged donors to offer material assistance and training support to them.
