The United States has joined a growing list of other countries and organisations hailing the conduct of the legislative elections in the West African nation of Guinea Bissau last Sunday. ”The United States congratulates the government and people of Guinea-Bissau on their successful November 16 legislative elections. The voters’ example should serve as an encouragement for democracies throughout Africa and around the world,” the US State Department said in a statement. It said the U.S. and international observers witnessed an election ”that was transparent, well-organised, and well-executed despite minor technical issues”. ”We call on all political parties to respect fully the election results and to work together to build a prosperous and secure future for Guinea-Bissau,” it added. ECOWAS, which also sent observers to the elections, and the UN have also hailed the conduct of the polls.
