An unidentified African migrant was killed by Egyptian police along the lengthy Sinai border with Israel on Monday, as the man attempted to illegally enter the Jewish state, Egyptian officials reported. They said the man was spotted by a police patrol near the desert border and, after he tried to escape, police opened fire on him. A local hospital said that the man had been shot in the stomach, thigh and leg. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the El Arish hospital. Officials were unable to identify the man as he carried no identification papers. Earlier this month, American-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on Egypt to end its “shoot-to-stop” policy along the border that has led to dozens of killings. They said that the illegal immigrants pose “no threat” to the safety of the police and that Egypt is using “excessive” force to stop Africans from entering Israel. Monday’s killing brings to 27 the number person killed by Egyptian security forces along the border with Israel this year. The illegal immigrants, mainly from Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea, see Israel as a place for work and a new start to their lives.
