Teething mixture banned in Nigeria after death of 25 children

Nigeria Tuesday announced the ban of a teething mixture produced by an indigenous company, Barewa pharmaceuticals based in the commercial city of Lagos, after it was blamed for the death of 25 children. Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili, announced the ban at a press conference here Tuesday. She said the firm had been shut and the product, ‘My Pikin Teething Mixture’, was being withdrawn from the drugs stores across the vast nation. Prof. Akunyili said a laboratory test had confirmed the presence of a dangerous chemical in the mixture.
