Four Guineans died while five others, including a Sierra Leonean, were arrested during a shootout in the country’s (Sierra Leone) waters, the police said Friday.
Police Spokesman Ibrahim Samura said the shootout occurred as the navy responded to a distress call from a Chinese fishing vessel which was attacked by the suspected pirates. He alleged that the suspects were armed with an AK 47 assault riffle, one Uzi sub-machine gun, three rounds of ammunition and other weaponry. Samurah, a police Inspector, said the engagement between the navy and the pirates saw two of the pirates shot dead, while two others drowned as they attempted to jump overboard from the Chinese vessel. He said the five suspects were currently helping the police with their investigation.
