Suspected militants have abducted a British citizen in Nigeria’s main oil city of Port Harcourt, the military and the police confirmed Friday. Military spokesman, Lt.-Col Sagir Musa, said the Briton, an oil service firm employee whom he did not identify, was abducted by unknown gunmen Thursday night. Rivers police command spokesperson, Rita Abbey, also confirmed the abduction, saying the police had commenced investigation into the abduction. Hostage taking for ransom is common in Nigeria’s restive oil producing Niger Delta region. Most hostages are usually freed unharmed after ransom payment, which are however rarely acknowledged by those involved.
