About 2,798 Moroccans have been afflicted by the dreaded AIDS disease since 1986, sources close to the Moroccan health ministry said Monday. According to the sources, the figure is low because the kingdom remains a country with a “low level of prevalence” of the infection. A communique published, Monday, on the occasion of the celebration of the World Aids Day, indicated that the level of prevalence of the infection was 0.008% for a population estimated at over 30 million. It said the Moroccan government took drastic actions between 2005 and 2008 to sensitize the public and prevent the spread of the disease particularly among young people and women. On screening for the virus, the number of beneficiaries has risen from 10,000 to 43,000 people, according to the communiqué.
