Former Senegalese prime minister and ex-Speaker of the National Assembly, Macky Sall, on Monday announced the formation of a political party called Alliance for the Republic (APR/YAAKAAR). Speaking at a news conference in Dakar he said that ARP was not just another party, but a political proposal that was premised on the principle that “the homeland is more important than the party”. Mr Sall, who resigned from the National Assembly and the ruling Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), called on his compatriots to join him in the new party based on values and principles. Several leaders of opposition political parties and PDS dissidents attended Mr Sall’s news conference.
