Police in Zimbabwe said Thursday they had arrested 16 soldiers, suspected to be part of a group of 100 which rioted in the capital, Harare, Monday in protest against growing economic hardships. In a show of unprecedented dissent, a group of soldiers Monday beat people on the streets and later looted shops after failing to withdraw cash from their bank accounts. A shortage of bank notes has forced the central bank to limit cash withdrawals from banks. Defence Minister Sydney Sekeramayi and top commanders Wednesday blamed the rioti ng on ‘rogue elements’ among the soldiers, and promised to severely punish those involved. Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said the army and police were jointly investigating the incident.
