In a statement Wednesday, the foreign affairs office announced the government was giving 3 million pula to the people of Zimbabwe, in view of the prevailing humanitarian crisis there. Botswana’s Director of Public Relations, Research and Information in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Clifford Maribe, says the money is solely for the people, not to be enjoyed by the Robert Mugabe administration. Speaking to the Mmegi, Botswana’s privately-owned daily Thursday, Maribe said his country was donating the money through the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund and the World Food Programme (WFP) because Botswana has always encouraged donors to assist the people of Zimbabwe.
