Over 1000 candidates to contest in Ghana Parliamentary and Presidential polls

A total of 1,060 parliamentary candidates have filed nominations to contest for 230 parliamentary seats in Sunday December 7 parliamentary and presidential election in Ghana. Statistics from the Electoral Commission (EC) said 957 are male and 103 female and that 95 are contesting as independent candidates. The EC said the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are contesting in 229 Constituencies. There are eight presidential candidates, seven of them contesting on the ticket of political parties and one independent candidate. In Election 2004, out of a total of 953 parliamentary candidates who contested 104 were female and 849 male. The figures show that 126 contested as independent candidates.
