Unknown gunmen have kidnapped two Russian workers at an aluminium smeltering company in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom state in the Niger Delta region, the local press reported Sunday. The aluminium company, ALSCON, was bought over by Russian giant RUSAL – the world largest aluminium and alumina producer, in 2007, explaining why many Russians are working there. The police have confirmed the kidnapping. Kidnapping, hitherto common in Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states, the three states regarded as the hotbed of militants, has recently spread to Akwa Ibom, forcing the state government to announce a reward of 1 million naira (US$7,700) for anyone with information on the kidnappers.
