Customs officials at Ghana’s main eastern border crossing point of Aflao have intercepted a Nigerian-registered vehicle ferrying a concealed quantity of arms and ammunition allegedly being smuggled to Nigeria. Oforkansi Martins was the only occupant of the Nissan Terano vehicle with registration number BU339ENU when he arrived at the border at 1600 GMT on Tuesday, Assistant Superintendent of Police Ahmed Issah Yakubu in charge of Aflao Police said. Yakubu said during routine checks, customs personnel detected an unusual arrangement in the boot of the vehicle and upon closer examination found the arms and ammunition concealed there. He said Martins, who claimed ownership of the arms and ammunition, has been handed over to the Aflao Police for investigation. Martins said he bought the arms and ammunition from a Ghanaian in Accra.
