Unknown gunmen have abducted the Chairman of the Rivers state scholarship board in Nigeria’s oil producing Niger Delta region, Mr. Elechi Amadi, security officials said Tuesday. The spokesman for the military Joint Task Force in the state, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, said that Amadi, a retired army Captain, was taken away from his village, Aluu, near the state capital city of Port Harcourt, Monday night. Musa said a ‘pecuniary motive’ was suspected to be the reason behind the abduction, the latest in a series of hostage-for-ransom campaign by some criminals in the restive region.
