Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, candidate of National Democratic Congress (NDC), was on Wednesday sworn in as President of Ghana before tens of thousands of people at the Independence Square that was turned into Parliament. He will serve a four-year term but could stand for re-election. Mills won 50.23 per cent of the votes against 49.77 per cent by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party in the second round of a closely fought election. He took the Presidential Oath and the Oath of Allegiance administered by the Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Wood. Earlier, Vice President John Dramani Mahama also took the oath of the Vice President and the Oath of Allegiance. Several West African heads of state, including the presidents of Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Sierra Leone and dignitaries from several countries also attended the swearing-in.
