The immediate past President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, was among the 100 students who graduated from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) on Wednesday. The university, which took off during Obasanjo’s eight-year rule (1999-2007), also conferred honorary doctorate degrees on three prominent personalities, including the Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Kochiro Matsuura, and former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari. Obasanjo, a self-confessed born-again Christian, received a Post Graduate Diploma in Christian Theology at the maiden convocation of the university, based in the commercial city of Lagos. The former President, a retired Nigerian Army General, holds a Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering, which he did on part-time basis while in the military.
