Liberia: United States to build a New Embassy in Monrovia

The United States has announced the award of a US$135.4 million contract to build a New Embassy Compound (NEC) in Monrovia, Liberia. B.L. Herbert International, LLC of Birmingham, Alabama, will construct the NEC in Monrovia the US State Department said in a press release. The 18-acre site, which is to accommodate the new embassy, is located in the Mamba Point neighbourhood in Monrovia and was acquired on a long-term lease from the University of Liberia for US$2.43 million in 2008. The project consists of a chancery, a support annex – warehouse, a general services annex, a Marine Security Guard quarters and three compound access control facilities. The NEC will provide safe, secure and functional facility for 619 employees who will work at the embassy. The NEC will replace the embassy which was constructed in 1963-66. The proposed completion date for the Monrovia NEC is 2012.
