Suffering the consequences of its suspension from ECOWAS, the west African economic bloc, amid other international restrictions, politicians in Guinea have proposed that elections in the country be held by the end of the year, following the inability of the military junta to fix a date for their proposed 2010 elections. The military took over power after the death of President Lansana Conte who had ruled the country for about 25 years. The proposed elections include a referendum, to be held in November, followed by presidential elections in December.
