Former south African President Mr. FW De Klerk has indicated that the court’s decision to drop charges against Jacob Zuma, leader of ANC, will be regarded in both South Africa and abroad as the most serious blow to the rule of law since the dawn of the country’s new constitutional democracy. The former president called on the civil society to mount legal challenges to the decision and demand the appointment of a judicial commission of enquiry into the case which threatens the constitutional system. He said no questions had been raised regarding the soundness of the NPA’s case against Zuma and the organisation has stated on affidavit that it has “a firm basis for the institution of a prosecution”.
