Algeria: President Abdelaziz Bouteflika retains his seat in a landslide win

Abdelaziz Bouteflika, 72, the Algerian president has won his bet in securing the his seat as president for a third time as he retained a staggering 90.24% of the total votes cast. Trotskyste Louisa Hanoune from the Workers’ Party came in second place with 4.22%. 74.11% of the Algerian electorate voted according to El Watan. 58.7% voted in the 2004 election. After the results were announced, four of the five candidates accused the electoral commission of “ballot box stuffing” and “fraud.” Despite a security service “adapted” to monitor polling stations, incidents broke out in Bouira while Islamists tried to sabottage voting at Nadria, located 50 km from Algiers.
