Ethiopia complies with Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel land mines

Ethiopia, reported as one of the leading anti-personnel mine users in Africa, has decided to abide by the Ottawa convention on anti personnel landmines by destroying a stockpile of about 54 000 mines. According to reports, Ethiopia’s use of anti-personal mines on its borders is as a result of its conflicts with Somalia and Eritrea. The horn of Africa country’s borders are mostly fitted with vehicular mines other than anti-personnel mines that are set-off by human or animal weight. They have until 2015 to clear their borders of anti-personnel mines.
