Mauritius PM to introduce “exploitation” bill in parliament

Navin Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius is expected to introduce a “Combating of Trafficking in Persons Bill” at Tuesday’s Parliamentary session. According to officials the bill is to give effect to the United Nations protocol to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons; prevent and combat trafficking in persons and protect and assist victims of trafficking. The bill describes “exploitation” as all forms of slavery or practices similar to slavery, including forced marriage, sexual exploitation, forced labour and the illegal removal of body organs. Offenders of human trafficking will be liable to penal servitude not exceeding 15 years.
