Nine men who were convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison after they were charged by a court for “unnatural acts” are to be released immediately after Senegal’s court of appeal moved to quash their sentences.
According to international rights group, although Senegalese laws are harsh towards homosexuals the sentences handed down to the men, who were “not caught in the act”, were the toughest ever.
Several international organisations as well as the French government criticised the convictions in January.
