Sudan: death penalty for 11 Darfur rebels

Eleven rebels from the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in Darfur have been sentenced to death for possession of illegal weapons and terrorist activities, judge Hafez Ahmed announced Monday. The rebels launched a violent attack in February 2009 to take control of the capital. The application of the death sentence is subject to confirmation by the high court signed by Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir.
